It’s all in the lips…

8 Jan

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, but what would you call the mouth? The cakehole to the gut? Perhaps, but there’s a lot more to the orifice than that.

Getting lippy

Scientific studies show that the fullness of woman’s lips directly correlate to her fertility levels i.e. the fuller they are, the more oestrogen she has. According to sexual psychologists, women with fuller lips are consequently perceived as more sexually attractive; a theory which Angelina Jolie‘s popular pout is testimony to.

Jolie, who is consistently polled as one of the sexiest women in the world, recently came second in ‘the most desired lips’ category of America’s 14th Annual ‘Famed Hottest Looks’ survey (Christina Aguilera came third while Scarlett Johansson bagged the top spot. Needless to say all three ladies have plump pouts.)

Lip enhancement

So big lips equal sexy, even science says so. In which case it’s highly unsurprising that lip enhancement injections are so popular amongst glamour models, whose professions revolve around emitting sex appeal. Indeed, Jordan aka. Katie Price, is a classic example of a glamour model who’s used cosmetic surgery to blow up lips out of all natural proportions.

While collagen lip injections seem a relatively recent trend, surgeons actually began injecting lips with paraffin as early as 1900, but did so without success. Later, in the 1960s, surgeons tried using liquid silicone – a technique which also failed.

Injectable bovine collagen was introduced to the cosmetic surgery market in 1980, but nowadays surgeons perform a range of alternative procedures including fat transfers, where excess fat from other parts of the patient’s body is harvested via liposuction and injected into the lips.

Alas, the circus-like results of cosmetically enhanced lips prove that big isn’t always better, cue Chantelle Houghton, Jodie Marsh, Pamela Anderson, Heidi Montag, Lesley Ash, Courtney Love and every other trout-pouted surgical disaster to date. The image of oversized, bright and glossy lips screams crude eroticism, but the fact that lurid lips ooze sex is nothing new.

Mankind has long recognized the sexual connotations of prominent lips; Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, and 19th century Britain are just a few of the cultural periods where lipstick was banned and reserved solely for prostitutes.

Over the centuries, however, the cultural significance of lipstick has continued to shift alongside varying social trends. From women to men, queens to drag queens, old Hollywood glamour to modern-day glamour models, everyone’s realized the appeal of big, bright lips.
