Egyptian Makeup Tutorial

2 Jan

Over two millennia have passed since her existence, but Cleopatra’s eyes are still very much in vogue. To achieve the legendary look and feline charm of Egypt’s last pharaoh, follow this step by step guide.

Cleopatra

Eyebrows

  1. Egyptians sported elongated and prominent eyebrows. To emulate this distinctive look, use Maybelline black Liner-matic for the brows.
  2. Focus on accentuating the arch of the brow, but avoid applying too much pressure.
  3. Use a BeneFit Hard Angled Brush to smooth out the pencil – this will help create the desired shape and prevent the texture from appearing clumpy.

Eyes

Eyes were of high importance in ancient Egyptian culture. The Eye of Horus, for instance, was a symbol of protection, royal power and good health. Beautiful, striking eyes were therefore a must for any self-respecting pharaoh.

Cleopatra and her clan applied kohl to the eyes, but did not do so for purely decorative purposes. Kohl was made from a mixture of ingredients including galena (the natural mineral form of lead sulfide) which helped deflect the glare of the desert sun, deter flies and prevent infection.

  1. To recreate the infamous almond shaped eyes, use generous amounts of Maybelline black Liner-matic eyeliner on the upper and lower eyelids.
  2. When drawing on the upper eyelid, hold the eyelid taut and begin drawing from the inner corner.
  3. Keep drawing in one fluid motion until you reach the temple. Repeat this step to increase the density of the line.
  4. For dazzling eyes, begin by sweeping gold Collection 2000 Dazzle Me Eye Dust across the eyelid area using a Benefit Talent Brush.
  5. Lashings of Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara will really let your eyes do the talking.

Colour

Green was very fashionable amongst the ancient Egyptians, who made green eyeshadow from malachite, a copper ore mined from the Timna Valley. You can use whichever colour scheme you like, but here’s how to create a lavish Egyptian look with varying shades of purple.

  1. Firstly, apply generous amounts of Estee Lauder’s Amethyst Pure Color Eyeshadow to the eyelid.
  2. To create a more gradient flow of colour, apply a mixture of Estee Lauder Signature Roseberry Silky Eyeshadow Duo to the area surrounding the eyelid. This should create a soft arch that will compliment the arch of the brow.

Shimmer

  1. For a more dramatic appearance, layer some lilac Barry M Dazzle Dust on top of the eyeshadow.
  2. To soften the look, blend a mixture of Estee Lauder Signature Roseberry Silky Eyeshadow Duo along the lower eyeline.

Skin

  1. Use a cosmetic sponge to apply No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation over the skin for an even appearance.
  2. In ancient Egypt, gold was considered to be the skin colour of the Gods. Apply Benefit High Beam to cheekbones for an ethereal glow.
  3. To really glimmer like the Gods, powder Collection 2000 Dazzle Me Eye Dust over the entire face using a Benefit Bronzer Brush.

Final Touches

  1. Short of buying a wig or dying your hair black, keep hair straight, sleek and simple with a pair of straighteners (the GHD IV Salon Styler never fails)
  2. You’re channelling Cleopatra, not clown, so stick with a subtle shade for the lips. Bobbi Brown’s Pink & Gold Lip Palette offers a pretty range of shimmering shades that are perfect for this look.
  3. Egyptians queens rouged their cheeks with red ochre, a pigment made from naturally tinted clay containing mineral oxides. For a deep hue, tint your cheeks with Benefit Dallas.
