Legendary blues singer Etta James, née Jamesetta Hawkins, has died today at the age of 73 following her battle with leukemia.
To say that Etta had an incredible voice is a crude understatement. In fact it’s difficult to find the right words to praise the raw, soulful talent that Etta possessed.
Etta’s unique voice catapulted her into the spotlight, but it was her character – the fiery woman behind the vocals – which cemented her status as a true icon.
‘The bad girls had the look that I liked,’ Etta wrote in her autobiography, Rage to Survive. ‘I wanted to be rare, I wanted to be noticed, I wanted to be exotic as a Cotton Club chorus girl, and I wanted to be obvious as the most flamboyant hooker on the street. I just wanted to be.’
Indeed, her strong, bold, and wild personality not only manifested itself in her singing style, but also in her appearance. Platinum hair, gigantic eyebrows, and tigress inspired eyes – you couldn’t miss her. But we do now.
