David Bowie Make Up Tutorial

An awesome work of art riddled with meaning, the flash of lightning emblazoned across David Bowie’s face has become a truly iconic image.

If you’re thinking of incorporating glam rock into your image, below is a quick how-to and list of recommended products for recreating Bowie’s dramatic look.

Eyes & Brows

Lightning bolt

  • When drawing the outline of Bowie’s iconic lightning bolt, use a high quality, black liquid eyeliner.
  • You can use whichever colour scheme you like, but we decided to add a purple twist to the original red flash of lightning.
  • Begin by applying Estee Lauder Amethyst Pure Color Eyeshadow along the left side of the lightning bolt.
  • Then, for a gradient flow of colour, fill in the rest of the lightning bolt with a combination of “Hold my Gaze” & “Magic Moor” eyeshadows from MAC’s Beauties Play it Cool eyeshadow palete.
  • Inject glitter rock into your appearance by powdering Barry M’s Emerald Dazzle Dust across the MAC eyeshadow.

Complexion

Hair

“I once asked (John) Lennon what he thought of what I do. He said: `it`s great, but it’s just rock and roll with lipstick on.'” – David Bowie

“I’m an instant star. Just add water and stir.” – David Bowie

Thank you Ash for glam rocking this look!x

  1. I’m looking for the original make up for David Bowie for the lightening I use to have the LP many years ago with his picture, and for what I remember it was more colorfull that I found on this web site, can you help me out?

  2. You want us to think that male model’s name is “Ash?” No way, you can’t fool us. That’s Bret McKenzie from “Flight of the Conchords!” Cool look, though. Perhaps you can also include a hotlink to Jimmy Fallon’s homage via “Tim TeBowie.” šŸ˜€
